"Renewable energy has an essential role to play in tackling three major challenges we are faced with today – climate change, security of supply and competitiveness in Europe, as was recognised in the Commission's Renewable Energy Road Map of January 2007. Offshore wind energy, with its multitude of benefits, will play an important role in reaching our ambitious target of a 20% share of renewable energy in the EU in 2020. However, developing this emerging technology is not without challenges, especially as offshore wind developments move further from shore and into deeper waters and as offshore wind farms increase in scale. I believe these challenges can be tackled through improved collaboration between Member States, and between Member States, the industry, NGOs and research institutions. The European Commission also has an important role to play in facilitating offshore wind, amongst others through one of the TEN-E priority project on the connection of offshore wind in the North Sea to the continental grid. I see this conference as an excellent opportunity to address and elaborate on what further steps can be taken in this respect. I am very please to be participating in the opening session of the 2007 European Offshore Wind Conference."

Alfonso Gonzalez Finat, Director, New and Renewable Sources of Energy, Energy Efficiency & Innovation, European Commission

"Offshore wind will be a key contributor to the UK meeting its share of the EU 2020 target and therefore I am pleased to be taking part in this key European event. I believe it is important to provide a long-term market for offshore renewables and we are about to announce our proposals for a major expansion of offshore wind - keeping the UK at the forefront of this exciting new technology. The consenting of over 2GW of offshore wind farms in the last 12 months in the UK, combined with the announcement of our future plans before the end of this year provides real evidence of a successful year. This is being reflected in industry as well, with Clipper Windpower recognising the potential for development in the UK and choosing a site in the North East of England to develop their 7.5MW turbine. I look forward to this event in Berlin providing a useful and empowering catalyst for industry for the next year ahead."

Malcolm Wicks, UK Energy Minister

"I see a big need to develop offshore technology in a way that best leverages its potential as a large-scale, cost-effective energy source.
The Swedish government supports this at home through initiatives like R&D and demonstration projects. Obviously, more needs to be done.
The main driving force must be getting turbine manufacturers to see the business opportunity of offshore, backed up by national, EU and international public spending. On top of that, we need a strong commitment from the traditional power generation industry.

The sheer scale of this event offers wonderful prospects for different players to swap experiences and to give offshore wind power a push forward"

Maud Olofsson, Deputy Prime Minister of Sweden and Minister of Enterprise and Energy

"The 2007 European Offshore Wind Conference offers an excellent opportunity to explore and discuss the potential of offshore wind in Europe. This will only be possible with your participation as experts in this field. I warmly invite you to participate at this conference and wish you a fruitful debate." - Full Article
